Risk Management Program Development

Risk can be eliminated, mitigated, minimized, and/or insured, however, first, risk must be identified. You can't manage risks that you don't know exists and, once known, you can't manage risks that you can't measure.

If your organization has an effective Risk Management Program there is a high probability that all significant risks associated with your health care operation will be identified. Once identified, the extent of exposure can be measured in terms of frequency, in terms of severity, in terms of change over time, in terms of categories of the same risk, in terms of costs, etc., etc.

Once a risk has been identified and accessed, policies and procedures can be put into place to, if possible, eliminate the risk exposure or, as appropriate, mitigate or minimize the risk.  Other, less obvious, benefits of a risk management program include the fact that insurance coverage to protect against a known risk exposure will be less expensive and, history has proven, if legal action is taken, associated fines and penalties will be less severe.

At the very least, a risk management program will inform management when policies and procedures, put in place to eliminate, mitigate, or minimize risks, are not being implemented or are not being implemented consistently.

QPS will assist your organization in developing an effective risk management program. The program will include training your staff on techniques for identification of risk exposure, the monitoring of identified risks, and, as appropriate, risk elimination, mitigation, or minimization techniques will be identified. The program will focus on the following high risk areas:
